The Athenaeum summer newsletter invites you to meet Susan Roman, the prolific collector behind the Randall Gallery exhibit on 100 years of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary. Also, learn little-known facts about some of our library’s rarest books and savor the details of the beloved annual summer pot-luck picnic, planned for Aug. 27 at Seacoast Science Center in Rye.

If you would like to receive the newsletter in paper form, please consider becoming a member of the Portsmouth Athenaeum. The newsletter is filled with interesting facts and in-depth articles relating to the Athenaeum as well as the important Calendar of Events.

		1	2 Franklin Club Franklin Club October 2, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA The Junto, also known as the Leather Apron Club, was a club for mutual improvement established in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia. The Leather Apron Club's purpose was to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs. The Athenaeum's newly formed Franklin Club was created with this mind. Please join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Sawtelle Reading Room. We loosely follow the list of questions from Ben Franklin’s club, and generally chat and share thoughts about current matters of life and town in a casual manner. 13	14	15	16 2024 LECTURE SERIES: “'Handsome Frank' Defeats 'Old Fuss ‘N Feathers!'” with Hugh Dubrulle 2024 LECTURE SERIES: “'Handsome Frank' Defeats 'Old Fuss ‘N Feathers!'” with Hugh Dubrulle October 16, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA Hugh Dubrulle will present a lecture on Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States and only president from New Hampshire. Pierce was just who the Democrats needed to defeat the Whigs’ candidate General Winfield Scott. Pierce had it all. He was a young honest statesman, a top trial lawyer, a loyal party leader and a charismatic orator. While a Brigadier General in the Mexican War, Pierce’s leadership qualities had become evident. He was a man of integrity and tolerance who seemed untainted by sectional prejudice. Franklin was loved by his constituents and respected by his peers on both sides of the aisle. He exercised a strict adherence to the Constitution and held a strong commitment to preserve the Union at all costs. Prof. Hugh Dubrulle is the chair of the History Department at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. Please note, the original presenters Paula Fortner and Phyllis Gagnon were unable to present the lecture on Franklin Pierce, so the description of this program may change in the next week. The Athenaeum is delighted to partner with the World Affairs Council for the first time and welcomes Tim Horgan (Executive Director) who will make introductory remarks. A reception will follow, and copies of Mariana’s book Inheriting the Bomb, the collapse of the USSR and the nuclear disarmament of Ukraine will be available.
