John Langdon, William Whipple and Elwyn Family Papers,1713-1965 – MS050

John Langdon, William Whipple and Elwyn Family Papers,1713-1965 – MS050

Provenance: The Papers were passed down by the descendants of Elizabeth Langdon Elwyn. Her grandson, the Rev. Alfred Elwyn of Philadelphia, gathered together many of the papers, privately publishing a selection in 1880 as Letters from Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Others, Written During and After the Revolution to John Langdon. He gave a portion of his collection (approx. 1,000 items) to the New Hampshire Historical Society in 1895. Some of these papers came into the hands of John Elwyn Stone, the great-grandson of Alfred. It is stated in his estate settlement in Rockingham Co., New Hampshire that “the Langdon papers once located in the Langdon House in Portsmouth…and in 1953 were removed by John Elwyn Stone.” There were several legal claims made on the papers at the time of his death but the court ruled in favor of the ownership passing to his sister Frances Stone Warrick. At his death some papers were at the Langdon farm in Portsmouth. These were given with that property (now called the “Urban Forestry Center”) to the state of New Hampshire. The state deposited those papers with the New Hampshire Historical Society in 1979. In 1991 Frances Stone Warrick gave Strawbery Banke Museum a portion of the collection and in 1992 she presented the Portsmouth Athenaeum with this collection.

In 1998, over two hundred additional Langdon and Whipple documents were purchased by the Athenaeum. Of these thirty were bought at Remember When Auction #44. In 1999 a group of items from RWA#44 were re-auctioned in RWA#47 and seventeen were purchased by the Athenaeum. Other materials have been added from various sources since 1997. See the Tables at the end of this register.

Scope and Content

The John Langdon papers, 1761-1817, are primarily letters to John Langdon (approx. 2,200), with one letterbook, 1775-1779, records of the building of the ships Raleigh and America for the Continental Navy, some records of the New Hampshire Government, and a few general business records. A large portion of the papers are from the period of the Revolutionary War, 1775-1781.

The letters are both business and political in nature. Langdon actively corresponded with representatives from New Hampshire to the Continental Congress, significantly William Whipple (69 letters) and Samuel Livermore (60 letters). Many letters are on Revolutionary War shipping and shipbuilding, including many letters to Robert Morris in his various governmental capacities, the Navy Board, Eastern Department, and ship captains Thomas Thompson, Thomas Simpson, and Hopley Yeaton.

There are few political letters after the war years but there is some correspondence with national and regional political leaders, such as, Gideon Granger, John Taylor Gilman, Nicholas Gilman, Henry Dearborn, James Sullivan, and others. Langdon’s business correspondence dates mostly from after the war. His primary business dealings were with Thomas Russell & Co., Boston; Willing, Morris, and Swanwick, Philadelphia: Wharton & Lewis, Philadelphia; and Lane, Son, and Fraser, London. The one letterbook in the papers was primarily for governmental business, and contains copies of letters sent in 1776-1777, and orders to ship captains, 1775-1779. In the remaining papers there are a few governmental records including a report for the Continental Congress on Fort Ticonderoga and the Northern Defenses, 1775; his receipts and accounts for shipbuilding, primarily for the Ranger and the America, 1777-1779. The New Hampshire governmental records include copies of his opening speeches to the legislature and their answers, a few orders to the militia, and printed proclamations of days of thanksgiving.

Letters from William Whipple to John Langdon can be found in the Individual Correspondence section, Box 4, folders 27-30, of the John Langdon papers. The William Whipple Papers, 1763-1783, Box 8, consist primarily of letters received and copies of those sent by William Whipple (approx. 254 letters totally, almost all of these are from the period of the Revolutionary War. Notable correspondents include Josiah Bartlett, James Lovell, and William Whipple’s brother, Joseph Whipple. In addition there are records and notes from his terms in the Continental Congress, many covering his involvement with the Marine Committee, the Foreign Affairs Inquiry Committee (i.e. the Silas Deane inquiry), and the New Hampshire Grants dispute (settling Vermont’s boundaries). There are also a few military records including a copy of Gen. Burgoyne’s articles of convention, military orders, and expenses.

The Elywn Family and other papers, consist primarily of letters to Elizabeth Langdon Elwyn, (approx. 300). Many of the letters are from her children, but there are notable letters from naval commander Isaac Chauncey, 1815-1825, editor Charles King, 1835-1838, and lawyer Timothy Upham who managed her New Hampshire properties, 1822-1830. There are some papers and letters of Thomas Elwyn, including records of the John Moffat estate and the legal case involved, Moffat vs. Whipple. There are some papers of Thomas and Elizabeth Elwyn’s children: Alfred , John, Thomas, William and a few items of Alfred’s descendants. There are also 16 letters to Peter Livius, 1760-1770, a few papers of Tobias Langdon and the Langdon family, 1713-1813.

The materials added to the original collection in 1998 are primarily of local interest. Many provide information on Langdon’s widespread shipping and other interests, while others reflect his political life as governor and senator. They are primarily from the 1780s to 1814 period for which the original Langdon holdings were the weakest. Materials include a 1794 request from Nathaniel Adams to buy at discount for the Portsmouth Library an encyclopedia printed in Philadelphia, 1800 letters about Mr. Savage’s portrait of John Langdon that was shipped to Portsmouth (now at Langdon House), a wonderful 1779 auction list selling the prizes of the schooner Chance and the Brig Patriot, and a long 1802 list of John Gardner’s insurance on Langdon’s ships. The auction items purchased at the same time reflect the nationally prominent spheres of the lives of John Langdon and William Whipple.

The John Langdon papers (in subgroup 1) were microfilmed in October 1995 in combination with the papers at Strawbery Banke. The finding aid for the microfilm has a fuller biographical summary of Langdon’s life, a chronological listing of the items (that notes which items are in the Athenaeum’s collection), and a detailed index.

The 1998 additional materials were microfilmed in 1998 by New England Micrographics of Manchester, NH. Rolls 115 and 116 include all of the Langdon and Whipple documents sold at Remember When Auction #44 plus the remaining documents purchased by the Athenaeum at the same time. See the additional materials table following this finding aid for microfilm locations of the materials purchased by and donated to the Athenaeum.

Biographical Notes

John Langdon, 1741-1819, was one of New Hampshire’s foremost political leaders during the Revolution and over the following four decades. He was a member of the Continental Congress, 1775-1776, a United States Senator, 1789-1801, Governor and President of New Hampshire, 1785-1786, 1788-1789, 1805-1812, and also served 12 terms in the New Hampshire legislature , most often as its speaker. During the Revolution he was active in shipbuilding for the Continental Navy, arranging the disposition of captured ships, and also importing supplies for the Continental Army. Langdon also maintained a successful career as a commercial shipping merchant.

William Whipple, 1730-1785, was a revolutionary military and political leader from Portsmouth, NH. He served in the Continental Congress, 1776-1779, and acted as a commander of New Hampshire’s Militia in the Saratoga and Rhode Island campaigns. He was a close political ally of John Langdon. After his death his wife, Catherine (Moffat) Whipple, was involved in a protracted dispute over her father, John Moffat’s, estate. Langdon’s son-in-law, Thomas Elwyn, acted as her lawyer in the 1813 New Hampshire Superior Court case. The ruling was not in her favor, forcing her to move from the family home.

Elizabeth Langdon Elwyn, 1777-1860, was John Langdon’s only child to survive infancy. She was married to Thomas Elwyn, 1775-1816, a native of England and they lived in Portsmouth until his death when she removed to Philadelphia. They had nine children: Catherine Cecelia, 1789-1833, who married Benjamin Woolsey Rogers; Eleanor Elizabeth, 1800-1835 who married Dr. Edward Delafield; John Langdon, 1801-1876; Emily Sophia, b. 1802, who married Col. John Erving; Alfred William Langdon, 1834-1862, who married Mary Middleton Mease; Charles Henry, 1807-1848; Emma Matilda, 1809-1862; William Octavius, 1811-1828; and Thomas Octavius, 1811-1831.

Processing Notes

The papers were generally not in any original order when they arrived. It was obvious that some attempts had been made to arrange the material but it was assumed that this had been done after John Langdon’s death and most likely at some recent date. The papers were therefore rearranged following standard archival practices. Many of the papers of William Whipple were intermixed with the Langdon papers. An attempt was made to separate them but some cases of misidentification are possible.

Additional materials received in 1998 were arranged by box and folder divisions established by the original version of this inventory. They were then interfiled in chronological order in these divisions and this inventory was revised to reflect the new materials. Tables for locating these additional materials, in the main collection and on microfilm, appear at the end of this inventory.
