Scope and Content
Receipts from many local businesses and organizations show the household bills paid by Jefferson C. Rowe for himself and his family. Some receipts reflect bills incurred by his wife Sarah Rowe and son Horace Rowe.
Biographical Note
Jefferson C. Rowe (1843-1935), lived at 38 Union Street, Portsmouth, then at 44 Union Street which was renumbered to 305 Union Street in 1910. In 1886 he was listed as a hackman. He was City Marshall for Portsmouth from 1887-1889 and again from 1893-1894. The bulk of his career was spent as Captain of the Watch at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. His wife, Sarah, is listed as a hair worker in the Portsmouth City Directory. Horace Rowe, presumably their son, is listed as a student.
