Scope and Content
Catherine Stulb lived on Columbia Street in Portsmouth and taught school in Newmarket, N.H. and Sanford, ME.
The scrapbook contains a written journal, newsclippings, postcards, photographs and other memorabilia of trips she made to the American West with two teaching colleagues – Madelyn Donovan and Marion Waterman – in the summer of 1952. The three had enrolled in a five-week summer school at the University of Wyoming and decided to drive across country and see as much as they could before taking classes.
On June 26, 1952, they left Portsmouth in “Gaby,” Marion’s Ford and drove north through NH, Vermont and Ontario, Canada and then re-crossed the border at Plattsburgh and headed west through New York, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Glacier National Park, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Salt Lake City, Utah, then, finally, to Laramie, Wyoming and the summer school. Classes began on July 14 and the summer term ended on August 15. While there, they visited Grand Teton National Park, and the rodeo at Cheyenne, and made a short trip to Colorado. On the return trip east they drove through Colorado, stopping at Colorado Springs, Pike’s Peak, and on to Arizona and the Grand Canyon, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania (stopping at U.Penn), New Jersey and all the way north to home.
In all, they had driven 10, 515 miles in 35 days, not countng the time they spent in Laramie at the summer school. They arrived back in Portsmouth on Sept 1. The scrapbook was completed on August 28, 1953. There is a list of the “brews” they discovered on their trip and a list of expenses. Altogether, a thorough account.
