Historical Note:

Records of the Strawberry Bank Grange #251, Portsmouth, NH. Bulk date 1905-1955. Lacking their own meeting space, the Portsmouth group met in the halls of other local fraternal organizations such as the Knights of Pythias. When the membership dwindled, they disbanded, and their membership was absorbed into the Rye and Kittery granges.

The grange movement, created in 1867, flourished at the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. A fraternal organization which included men, women and children over the age of 14, it promoted the economic, cultural and agricultural wellbeing of the community, especially farming communities. Although the grange movement is smaller than it once was, it still is active in many rural areas and still concerns itself with farmers’ rights and wellbeing.
