Scope and Content
The Oscar Laighton Papers contain personal correspondence, poetry and miscellaneous ephemera. The bulk of the material is correspondence and poetry.
Correspondence in the collection is primarily to and from Oscar Laighton, with many letters to and from his niece Rosamond Thaxter. There are various additional correspondents. There are many condolences sent to Rosamond upon the death of Oscar Laighton in 1939.
The collection also contains poetry, mostly by Oscar Laighton, with some other authors. The Oscar Laighton poems include some that are handwritten, typed or printed on cards. Some of the poems are titled and also bear the label, “Ballads of Camden, South Carolina.” Oscar Laighton spent winters at the Kobkirk Inn in Camden, South Carolina. There are multiple instances when different poems bear the same name, such as “Dreams.” In cases such as “By Automobile” there are what appears to be four drafts of the same poem, with slight variations.
The collection also contains miscellaneous small ephemera pieces such as calling cards and checks. A collection of newspaper clippings about Celia Thaxter and Oscar Laighton, including obituaries was separated to the vertical file.
Biographical Note
Oscar Laighton was born to Thomas and Eliza (Rymes) Laighton on June 30, 1839 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was the brother of acclaimed poet and artist, Celia Thaxter. While he never gained the level of notoriety of his sister, Oscar Laighton also published several books of poetry as well as a memoir, Ninety Years at the Isles of Shoals. He is also known for his pencil sketches and paintings of fish and ships. Known as “Uncle Oscar” he and his brother Cedric operated hotels at the Isles of Shoals. In his later life Oscar spent summers at the Isles of Shoals and winters in Camden, South Carolina, while also maintaining a house in Portsmouth. He died April 4, 1939 just shy of his 100th birthday.
