Scope and Content:

Papers, primarily correspondence, but also including deeds, legal settlements, and shipping accounts relating to Portsmouth physician and merchant Nathaniel Appleton Haven (1762-1831). Bulk date 1790-1799. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author.

Biographical Note:

Nathaniel Appleton Haven (1762-1831) was part of a large family, the son of Reverend Samuel Haven, pastor of South Church, Portsmouth.  He graduated from Harvard College in 1779 with a degree in medicine. After the Revolutionary War, in which he acted as a ship’s surgeon, Haven established himself in Portsmouth as a physician and merchant. Eventually he became a successful ship owner and civic leader. Haven was elected as a Federalist to the 11th US Congress (1809-1811). He died in Portsmouth on March 13, 1831 and is buried at the Proprietor’s Burying Ground.  He was a proprietor of the Portsmouth Athenaeum.
The Haven house was located on High Street opposite Ladd Street. It burned in 1986.

Nicholas Rousselet, author of many of the letters in this collection,  had trade and business connections with Nathaniel Haven. Born about 1760, he was an auctioneer in Boston in 1785, the year that he was naturalized as a US citizen. He lived in Portsmouth for a period of time, marrying Catherine Elizabeth (Betsy) Moffatt, daughter of Samuel Moffatt of Portsmouth, in 1786. Daughter Lucy was born in Portsmouth in 1788. They lived in Philadelphia briefly, then moved to Demerary (now British Guiana).  After Betsy died in 1799, NIcholas Rousselet married again in 1806. He died in 1811 in Basse Terre, Guadaloupe.

Historical Note:

These papers had been stored in an attic in Kittery. When the house burned in 1949, the material was saved, but some of the material is very charred. After the fire the collection was stored in the cellar of another house in Kittery until donated to the Athenaeum in 2005.
