Scope and Content

The Harmony Grove and Sagamore Cemetery Records consist of 4 volumes of financial records and 2 index volumes. The financial records include the sale of plots, individuals purchasing plots, maintenance of the cemeteries (repairing walls, mowing, etc.), and rent for vaults and tombs. One volume contains several pages of records for New Castle’s Riverside Cemetery.

Folder 1 Record Book for Harmony Grove and Sagamore Cemeteries, 1862-1894. Includes records of plot purchases, tomb rent, insurance, care of the cemetery, etc. Inscribed on first page top: “My Private Accounts BC.” In rear of book are records for rent from numerous individuals, including Sarah Carter, William Martin, Josephine Amazeen, A. P. Blake, and William Martin. There are records of rent for the Howard Benevolent House on High Street (page 70). Starting on page 100 and then again on page 192 there are records for the Riverside Cemetery in New Castle.

Folder 2 Record Book for Harmony Grove and Sagamore Cemeteries, 1872-1874. Including a hand drawn plan in the front, labeled “Imperfect Plan.” There is also a photograph of an ornate street sign pasted in the front. Only the first few pages of the book are used.

Folder 3 Record Book for Harmony Grove and Sagamore Cemeteries, 1874-1888 ca. On front in ink: “Ledger A.” Account book with financial notes about individuals owing and paying money. Pasted inside front cover for the “National Greenback Labor Ticket” with a list of candidates including governor, congressman, railroad commissioner, and councilor.

Folder 4 Record Book for Harmony Grove and Sagamore Cemeteries, 1888-1898. Includes records of plot purchases, tomb rent, insurance, care of the cemetery, etc.

Folder 5 Record Book for Harmony Grove, Sagamore and Proprietor’s Burial Ground. 1899-1903. Labeled, “J. H. Cheever” in ink on front. Includes sale of plots, whether in Harmony Grove, Sagamore or Proprietor’s Burial Ground, the section, and date of deed. Note: Numerous pages have been torn out.
