PACM SERIES: Balourdet String Quartet

The Balourdet Quartet – currently Graduate Quartet in Residence at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University – received Chamber Music America’s 2024 Cleveland Quartet Award and the Grand Prize at the 2021 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, as well as top prizes in international competitions including the Banff, Premio, Paolo Borciani, Carl Nielsen, Fischoff and Yellow Springs Competitions.

As recent graduates of the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet training program, the group received Chamber Music America’s 2021 Commissioning grant with composer Karim Al-Zand as well as a 2023 grant from the Barlow endowment with Paul Novak.

The Balourdet Quartet was formed in 2018 at Rice University in Houston, Texas under the tutelage of James Dunham, Norman Fischer, and Cho-Liang Lin. It is composed of violinists Angela Bae and Justin DeFilippis, violist Benjamin Zannoni, and cellist Russell Houston. The Quartet takes its name from Antoine Balourdet, chef extraordinaire at the Hotel St. Bernard and beloved member of the Taos School of Music community.

Yet vigorous at the age of 207, the Portsmouth Athenæum is one of only a few non-profit membership libraries remaining in the U.S. Sited at the heart of the town and an active part of the life of the community, we hold manifold lectures, exhibitions and concerts dedicated to the edification and enjoyment of all.

Membership and participation are open to everyone.
