3:00 p.m.
New Castle Congregational Church, 65 Main St, New Castle, NH
New York-based violinist Emily Daggett Smith, a favorite of Portsmouth audiences, rejoins the Historic Portsmouth Chamber Music 2018 Series this season with pianist Constantine Finehouse, who hails from St. Petersburg, Russia, via New England Conservatory, Juilliard and Yale. Their program will include Leos Janacek’s “Violin Sonata,” mixing depictions of WWI horrors with folk-derived melodies of yearning and beauty; Beethoven’s bright and youthful “Violin Sonata No. 1 in D major, Op. 12 No. 1,” and Brahms’ third and last “Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108,” whose wistful opening movement is followed by one of the most sublime slow movements ever written for violin and piano.
