		1	2 Franklin Club Franklin Club October 2, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA The Junto, also known as the Leather Apron Club, was a club for mutual improvement established in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia. The Leather Apron Club's purpose was to debate questions of morals, politics, and natural philosophy, and to exchange knowledge of business affairs. The Athenaeum's newly formed Franklin Club was created with this mind. Please join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Sawtelle Reading Room. We loosely follow the list of questions from Ben Franklin’s club, and generally chat and share thoughts about current matters of life and town in a casual manner. 13	14	15	16 2024 LECTURE SERIES: “The Paradox of Franklin Pierce's Politics” with Hugh Dubrulle 2024 LECTURE SERIES: “The Paradox of Franklin Pierce's Politics” with Hugh Dubrulle October 16, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA Both scholars and the public remember Franklin Pierce, the only person from New Hampshire elected to the American Presidency, as one of the nation’s worst chief executives, largely because he exacerbated the sectional crisis that led to the Civil War. Pierce is often portrayed as a political lightweight without strong opinions who often served the interests of others. Such an image does not recognize the political principles that guided him throughout much of his career. This talk will focus on Pierce’s political ideas, particularly his commitment to the Union, which his actions, ironically, did so much to tear asunder. Hugh Dubrulle received his BA in History from Pomona College and his MA and PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has taught courses on modern Europe and military history in the History Department at Saint Anselm College for over twenty years. Dubrulle is the author of Ambivalent Nation: How Britain Imagined the American Civil War (LSU Press, 2018). He he is currently working on a book about the experience of Civil War soldiering in the 5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. We apologize for any inconvenience. •	17	18 “Ukraine’s Nuclear Disarmament and Its Impact on the Global Nuclear Order” with Mariana Budjeryn “Ukraine’s Nuclear Disarmament and Its Impact on the Global Nuclear Order” with Mariana Budjeryn October 18, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA Ukranian American Mariana Budjeryn will discuss “Ukraine’s Nuclear Disarmament and Its Impact on the Global Nuclear Order” with Proprietor Gil Barndollar as moderator. The Athenaeum is delighted to partner with the World Affairs Council for the first time and welcomes Tim Horgan (Executive Director) who will make introductory remarks. A reception will follow, and copies of Mariana’s book Inheriting the Bomb, the collapse of the USSR and the nuclear disarmament of Ukraine will be available.
