Scope and Content
Collection consists of 6 volumes of Allied Theater Company account books dating from 1916 to 1919. The books include records of expenses for the four theaters, including payroll, rent, fees paid to movie companies, etc. The books are often repetetive one to the next, however organized in different formats (some as day books of expenses and others in the form of balance sheets).
Allied Theaters included the Colonial Theater (Congress Street, later Eagle Photo Supply), Olympia Theater (Vaughn Street), Portsmouth Theater (Chestnut Street, currently the Music Hall), and Scenic Temple (High Street). The officers of the Company were John H. Bartlett (President), Albert Bishop (Vice President), Willis N. Rugg (Treasurer), Volney C. Badger (Clerk) and William P. Gray (Director).
Volume 1 Account Book February 1916 – Book includes records of expenses including Fox Film, Payroll, Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth Herald, Telephone, City of Portsmouth, etc. for each of the four theaters.
Volume 2 Account Book February to May 1916 – Book includes records similar to Book 1 in a balance sheet format.
Volume 3 Account Book February 1916 – December 1918 – Book contains records similar to Books 1 and 2 in a balance sheet format.
Volume 4 Account Book 1917 – Book includes record of expenses including Fox Film, Payroll, Portsmouth Times, Portsmouth Herald, Telephone, City of Portsmouth, etc. for each of the four theaters.
Volume 5 Account Book March 1918-1919 – Book contains records of four theater expenses in a balance sheet format.
Volume 6 Account Book August to October 1919 – Book contains records of four theater expenses in a balance sheet format.
