Summary

Correspondence, financial papers, and shipping records of Wendell; together with papers and photographs of his descendants. Family members represented include his sons, Jacob Wendell (1826-1878), a Boston and New York merchant, and George Blunt Wendell (1831-1881), clipper ship captain, of Quincy, Mass.; grandsons, James Rindge Stanwood (1847-1910), local historian, of Portsmouth, Barrett Wendell (1855-1921), scholar, who inherited the family home in Portsmouth, and Evert Jansen Wendell (1860-1917), philanthropist and athlete; Barrett’s wife, Edith (Greenough) Wendell (1859-1938), civic leader; and their son, William Greenough Wendell (1886-1968) and his wife, Evelyn (Fahnestock) Wendell, later owners of the Portsmouth residence.

Scope and Content

Personal and business correspondence of five generations, including account books, estate settlements, travel diaries, ephemera, maps. The arrangement of correspondence is primarily chronological, grouped by addressee. Oversize materials are at the end of sequence.

Five Wendell generations contributed to personal and business correspondence, travel diaries, memoirs, and ephemera found in this collection. From John Wendell (1731-1808) to William G. Wendell (1888-1968), family members lived in Portsmouth and maintained the same house on Pleasant Street. John Wendell’s youngest son, Jacob Wendell (1788-1865) was a lifelong Portsmouth resident whose extensive records form one third of the collection.

Except for Jacob’s grandson, James Rindge Stanwood, his male descendants left to work elsewhere; once settled in Boston or New York, they traveled extensively and spent only summers in the Portsmouth area. The correspondence of Jacob Jr., his descendants, and their connections reflects this wider universe and creates a series of sub-sections varying considerably in slope and context. The following summaries, therefore, are intended only as guide posts to more detailed descriptions preceding each section.

Biographical Notes

John Wendell, a lawyer, moved to Portsmouth after graduating from Harvard and acquired considerable land holdings in New England. His first wife was Sarah Wentworth; his second wife, Jacob’s mother, was Dorothy Sherburne. Although most of John Wendell’s papers are located in other libraries, this collection does include some of his records, especially land maps and material on Dorothy Wendell’s estate.

Jacob Wendell was a merchant ship owner, and insurance agent who was active in Portsmouth’s financial and civic life from 1810-1865. He also managed the financial offices of ship captains. Samuel Pray and Reuben S. Randall, and merchants Ichabod Goodwin and M.B. Trundy. —- Jacob’s financial records are store ledgers, shipping data, insurance inventories, and estate settlements. His personal correspondence, especially letters to his sons and son in-law, offers frequent references to local maritime and civic events.

Jacob Wendell II (1826-1898), Jacob’s oldest son, became a wealthy merchant in Boston and New York City. Married to Mary Bertode Barrett, he inherited the Pleasant Street home, and summered at Frostfields, his mansion in Newcastle.

James Rindge Stanwood (1847-1910), grew up with his grandparents in the Portsmouth Wendell house and lived there until his death. Aside from a brief period in the wool business in Boston, he devoted his time to local history and collecting Americana. Like his grandfather Jacob, he was a member of several local organizations and of the Bostonian Society.

Barrett Wendell (1855-1921), one of Jacob Wendell II’s four sons, inherited the Portsmouth home in 1917 and lived there after his retirement from Harvard University. A well known scholar of English literature, he traveled extensively with his wife, Edith Greenough Wendell (1859-1938). She was very active in local and state organizations.

Evert Jansen Wendell (1860-1917), Barrett’s brother, was a noted athlete at Harvard and noted for his involvement with the Children’s Art Society of New York. His travel journals are part of this collection.

The Barrett Sisters, Elizabeth Brown Barrett (1828-1906) and Sarah Dorr Barrett (1826-1913), were sisters of Jacob II’s wife, Mary Bertode Barrett and thus Barrett Wendell’s aunts. Life long residents of Boston, they did not marry and spent much of their time in charitable work. Elizabeth was an artist; Sarah maintained a life long interest in music. Their papers offer an extensive view of women’s social life during the latter half of the nineteenth century, in New England and as residents in Europe.

Of Barrett Wendell’s four children, William G. Wendell (1888-1968) inherited the Portsmouth residence and with his wife Evelyn F.S. Wendell (1905-1988), he was extensively involved in local community activities. His sister Mary Wheelock VanderWoude traveled to China with her first husband, and lived in England during the Second World War. His other sister, Edith Wendell Osborne, married the mayor of an up-state New York town and served as a center for her siblings’ communications of Barrett Jr., the fourth child, who lived in Chicago.

Other Wendell family items are indexed in the Athenaeum’s manuscript listings and card catalog. Harvard University owns significant holdings of Wendell manuscripts, located in the Houghton and Baker Libraries.

Separated Materials

Many printed pamphlets and books have been cataloged as individual titles. A large Wendell photograph collection (P3) was processed separately and included in the Athenaeum’s Photograph Index.
