Scope and Content Pontine Movement Theatre—MS 116 includes the theatrical production scripts, playbills, posters and videos as well as correspondence, ephemera and other related material from both its productions and guest performances (1977 – present).
Summary In 1977, Pontine Movement Theatre (then New Hampshire Mime Company) opened in Market Square Studio with Karen Penhale, the director of Piscataqua River Jazz Dancers. M. Marguerite Mathews taught adult classes and performed solo. Star students were Anne Sauve, Ellen Breed and Karen Penhale. Company applied to state as a non-profit under the name New Hampshire Mime Company. Mathews, Sauve and Breed began touring as a trio performance. In 1981-82, the organization became Pontine Movement Theatre. In 1989-90, Pontine moved to McDonough Street Studio, and then in 2003, they moved to West End Studio. In 2016, Pontine departs from West End Studio and begins residency at Strawbery Banke Museum. Pontine has evolved from primarily a corporeal dance company to present a diverse range of voices on its stage and a full range of movement styles (performance art, mime, clown theatre, puppetry, new vaudeville, mask performance and dance theatre). Since its inception, Pontine has created over fifty original works that have been presented in hundreds of communities throughout New England. In addition to its own studio, Pontine performs in non-traditional spaces such as community centers, historical societies, senior centers, art galleries, libraries and museums. Biographical Summary
1977-78 New Hampshire Mime Company opened in Market Square Studio, Market Square, Portsmouth, NH, with Karen Penhale, the director of Piscataqua River Jazz Dancers. M. Marguerite Mathews taught adult classes and performed solo.
1978-79 The Company establishes Movement Celebration, a series of summer performances on portable stages at various locations in downtown Portsmouth. Performers also include Piscataqua River Jazz Dancers and guest artists.
1980-81 Gregory Gathers begins costume construction for the Company. 1981-82 Karen Penhale departs, and Company changes name to Pontine Movement Theatre. The following season, a real working board is formed, and an office opens on Congress Street.
1983-84 Ellen Breed leaves the company, and Gregory Gathers becomes resident designer. The office moves to space across from studio.
1984-85 Gathers and Mark Towle join the company.
1985-86 Anne Sauve departs the company, leaving only M. Marguerite Mathews as the original company member. Erika Batdorf joins the company.
1987-88 Gathers joins Mathews as co-artistic director, Mark Towle and Erika Batdorf leave the company.
1988-89 Pontine renovates and moves to McDonough Street Studio, McDonough St., Portsmouth, NH.
1991-92 Mathews and Gathers assume all administrative functions; Larry Jones joins as performer.
1992-93 Larry Jones leaves.
1998-99 Pontine website launches (www.pontine.org).
2002-06 Mathews is named the New Hampshire Artist Laureate.
2004 Pontine renovates and moves to West End Studio Theatre, 959 Islington St., Portsmouth, NH.
2013 Mathews receives the Lotte Jacobi Living Treasure Award.
2016-17 Pontine leaves the West End Studio, and the company moves to residency space at Strawbery Banke Museum for the season with long term plans to renovate and relocate to the Plains School in Portsmouth.

1995 Oct. Eleven ‘thank you’ notes written by fourth-graders from Woodland Heights Elementary. Pontine was Artist-in-Residence at the elementary school on Oct. 23, 25 and 27. There were 12 students chosen to participate in this program. An undated photocopy of the article “Portsmouth’s Pontine Theatre Takes Up ‘Residence’ in Laconia” from most likely the Laconia Daily Sun accompanies the ‘thank you’ notes.
