Historical Note
The Great Bay Estuarine System Conservation Trust Papers were collected by Betty Huggins, a founder member of the organization, and were donated to the Portsmouth Athenaeum after her death by Barbara Ward.
The Trust was spearheaded by Evelyn Browne, an environmentalist, outdoor educator, and activist who taught at the University of New Hampshire. She donated six acres of forest land on Durham Point to be used for the foundation of a UNH center in outdoor education, called The Browne Center for Innovative Learning. She was also instrumental in the establishment of the Great Bay National Estuary Research Reserve.
