Scope and Content

Collection consists of diaries dating from 1829 to 1834, recording Haven’s European travel. George graduated from Dartmouth College in 1828. The following year he began a “grand tour of Europe.” He left New York City, on the Packet Ship “Sally” (a steamboat), August 10, 1829. Over the next three and a half years he traveled extensively through France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, England, Scotland and Ireland. He was fortunate in meeting Johann Goethe, William Wordsworth, and other men of genius and he came back with his mind stored with the riches of literature and learning whose treasures he was never weary of sharing with his friends. His Certificate of Health at Valenciennes, France indicates that he was 5’11” tall and had blue eyes and brown hair. He returned to Portsmouth from Le Harve on February 24, 1834.

He traveled with Russians, Poles, Germans, Italians, English and French. In the major cities they visited churches, palaces, museums and the occasional graveyard.
