SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: "Captain John Manley: Patriot\, Privateer\, and America'
s Forgotten First Hero" by Kenneth M. Sheldon
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the American Revolution\, Captain John Manl
ey was a hero. His daring naval exploits were celebrated in song and repor
ted in newspapers throughout the colonies. George Washington and John Adam
s praised him. Yet today\, Manley is largely forgotten\, and even his fina
l resting place remains unmarked.\n\nAuthor Kenneth M. Sheldon spent years
uncovering the story of this neglected Revolutionary figure. How did a ca
reer that began with extraordinary success end in poverty and obscurity? I
n his illustrated presentation\, “Captain John Manley: America’s Forgo
tten First Hero\,” Sheldon traces Manley’s dramatic rise and fall\, sh
aring both the celebrated exploits of his naval career and fascinating\, l
ittle-known episodes—including the time John Adams represented him in a
lawsuit.\n\nThe program will include readings from Sheldon’s new biograp
hy of Manley. Captain John Manley: Patriot\, Privateer\, and America’s F
orgotten First Hero is the first comprehensive examination of Manley’s l
ife. Published to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary\, the boo
 k draws on naval records\, newspaper accounts\, diaries\, journals\, and o
riginal documents to reveal the remarkable story of one of the Revolution
 ’s most important—and overlooked—naval leaders.\n\nFollowing the pre
sentation\, Sheldon will answer questions and sign copies of his book. The
event is FREE and open to the public in our third-floor Shaw Research Lib
 rary\; however\, due to limited seating\, registration is required.\n\nReg
istration Information Online registration is available until 24 hours befo
