DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This event is full.\nMusic enthusiasts old and young—
join us for an afternoon of rich musical storytelling with Jeff Warner\, o
ne of the nation’s foremost interpreters of traditional American folk mu
sic.\n\nPerforming in the Shaw Research Library at the Portsmouth Athenaeu
m on Sunday\, April 6\, at 3:00 p.m.\, this special event is open to membe
rs and friends.\n\nJeff’s performances connect 21st-century audiences to
the lives and artistry of 19th-century Americans\, weaving together songs
from lumber camps\, fishing villages\, and mountain communities. Accompan
ying himself on concertina\, banjo\, guitar\, and traditional pocket instr
uments\, Jeff brings history to life through music\, humor\, and storytell
ing. This performance focuses on the following:\n\nRange the Wild Woods Ov
er: Loggers' Songs and Stories\n\nLoggers at the turn of the twentieth cen
tury cut the timber that built and warmed our houses and provided the ties
  for America's ever-expanding railroads. Timber established Portsmouth\, P
ortland and Bangor as important ports\, sending New England lumber around
the world. Folklorist Jeff Warner relates the songs and stories of the peo
ple who worked the wintry woods\, showing their humor and their grit\, and
giving us a glimpse into everyday life in long ago lumber camps.\n\nA lon

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS NEARLY FULL.\nOverlooking the Piscataqua
River’s back channel at Little Harbor sits one of Portsmouth’s hidden
gems\, the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion. Home of New Hampshire’s first Roy
al Governor\, Benning Wentworth. The rambling forty-plus-room mansion repr
esents one of only two colonial governor’s residences to have survived e
ssentially unchanged since its original construction. Over its long histor
y\, the Little Harbor estate has served as a working farm\, seat of govern
ment\, summer home and artist retreat. From its unique architecture to the
elegant gardens and historic lilacs that once graced its grounds\, the ma
nsion has faithfully reflected the eclectic tastes of three centuries of o
wners.\nFor ten years John Rule served as tour guide at the Wentworth-Cool
idge Mansion. He has lectured on the history of colonial governor Benning
Wentworth’s land grants and participated in a public panel discussing in
teresting and little-known facts about the Wentworth mansion. Rule is also
a volunteer archivist at the New Hampshire Historical Society where he ha
s lectured and written about the history of New Hampshire's Brown Paper Co
mpany.\nAdi Rule was a guide at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion for a decad
e and still wonders if she’s seen all of it. In addition to guiding\, sh
e facilitated and organized events\, including moderating the panel “Sec
rets of the Mansion.” Previously\, she was an interpreter at Strawbery B

SUMMARY:2025 Lecture Series: “The Lady Pepperrell House and Gardens” w
 ith Anne Mankin Masury
DESCRIPTION:Just across the Piscataqua\, the Lady Pepperrell House and Gard
ens of Kittery Point is noted as one of the most high style pre-Revolution
ary Georgian houses in Maine. The Lady Pepperrell House boasted significan
t landscapes over time\, as did the family houses at the William Pepperrel
l and Sparhawk Houses. Shifting political events and the fortunes of nearb
y shipping and coastal resources would propel the economic rise\, fall and
resurgence of each ownership era. The interaction of the Pepperrell famil
y and later owners with some of Portsmouth’s famous residents ties the t
wo communities together and reveals the influence of garden style on eithe
r side of the river.\n\nAnne Mankin Masury has a master’s degree in plan
t science from the University of Connecticut\, where she completed a progr
am in historic landscape restoration. She worked for many years at Strawbe
ry Banke Museum as Landscape Director and Director of Field Schools in His
toric Preservation. She has consulted for museums with her business\, Flet
cher Hill Gardens. She resides in Kittery Point\, Maine.\nFor the 2025 Lec
