Tour of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) [FULL]

August 29

Free

Update: This program is now full, but you can join the wait list until August 14, 2024. Please send an email to events@portsmouthathenaeum.org including your full name (as it appears on a government issued identification), home street address, age, and a statement that you are a US citizen. This personal information is needed for security clearance as mentioned below.

The tour will be led Shipyard Historian, Joe Gluckert, assisted by Proprietor Ken Goldman. Ken will give a short talk about the shipyard and submarines, then Joe will point out various historical points in the shipyard, including the mall where you will see a memorial to the WWII submarine Sailfish, and the historic Commander’s Residence, Quarters A.

From the mall, we will walk to the Treaty Room in Building 86 where the Russian and Japanese delegations negotiated the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese war in 1905 (it is necessary to climb two flights of steps to reach the Treaty Room). There will be a brief stop outside Portsmouth Naval Prison, followed by a visit to the Heritage Center, where docents will walk you through the history of PNSY. The tour will not enter the Controlled Industrial Area where the actual work on the submarines is performed.

Details TBA. Please note that the bus is limited to 25 people, and the tour is not handicap accessible.

Please note, this tour will require a U.S. government background check before you can enter the facility.

You will first receive an automatic confirmation email after signing up for the event, and subsequently, you will receive a follow-up email from an Athenaeum staff member where we will ask you to provide the following information for you and any additional member of your group:

  • Full name as it appears on a Government photo ID, which you will need to bring when you attend the tour (most people use a driver’s license or a passport)
  • Home street address
  • Age
  • A statement that you are a US Citizen (we don’t need documentation as Shipyard Security will run a quick background check).

Due to security clearance, we are unable to add any last-minute registrations.
