Scope and Content
The Laighton Family Papers contain personal correspondence, writings, deeds, legal documents, genealogical, and biographical material. The bulk of the material is made up of correspondence and can be found in Boxes 1 and 2.
The correspondence is primarily between various members of the Laighton family, the largest amount being between Cedric Laighton and Celia Laighton Thaxter, running to two hundred and thirty-nine letters, typed transcriptions of which can be found in a bound volume (Box 1 F.16). Other family correspondents include Oscar Laighton, Thomas Bell Laighton (father) and Eliza Rymes Laighton (mother).
The collection also contains original manuscript poetry by members of the family, notably four poems by Celia Thaxter (Box 2 F.28). There are several folders related to the possible sale of the Isles of Shoals property to a firm in England in the 1890s.
In 2021, the Athenaeum received additions to the collection and the manuscript component of this material was integrated into the existing collection in 2022. This additional material is indicated in the finding aid by a double asterisk ** Most of this additional material is again correspondence between members of the Laighton and Stowell families including Julia (Stowell) Laighton, Cedric’s wife, and Abbey (Corey) Stowell, her mother. Several folders contain material on the possible building of an oil refinery on the New Hampshire coast by Aristotle Onassis in the 1970s. This proposal was defeated by a combination of efforts by the citizens of Rye and Durham. Had it gone ahead, there would be no Isles of Shoals as we know them today.
